2026 BYD TANG: Impressive EV Specs and Range

BYD’s five-seat flagship SUV pairs an 850-km claimed range with Blade Battery technology and ultra-fast charging.

The BYD TANG is returning in third-generation form as a large five-seat electric SUV aimed at China’s growing premium family-vehicle market. Unveiled at the Chengdu International Auto Show, the new model combines an 850-km claimed range, rapid charging, air suspension, and LiDAR-based ADAS.

The launch matters globally because BYD is bringing flagship technology into a more accessible vehicle segment. The third-generation Tang is expected to enter the RMB 200,000 class, equivalent to approximately US$27,800, although BYD has not announced an official price.

Range, Battery, and Charging

The new BYD Tang uses a pure-electric powertrain and BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. The source does not disclose battery capacity, usable battery capacity, cell chemistry, motor output, motor torque or the number of electric motors.

BYD quotes an electric driving range of up to 850 km, but it has not confirmed whether this figure is based on the CLTC testing cycle. If it is a CLTC result, real-world and comparable WLTP ranges are typically about 15-20% lower, while EPA figures may differ even more due to different testing procedures.

The SUV features BYD Flash Charging. The company claims that the battery can reach approximately 70% in five minutes and 97% in nine minutes under normal-temperature conditions. Charging in extremely cold environments reportedly takes about 3 minutes longer.

Precise DC fast-charging power, AC charging power, charging curves, and Vehicle-to-Load capability remain undisclosed.

Chassis, Space and Cabin Technology

The third-generation Tang uses DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, double-wishbone front suspension, and five-link rear suspension. Its intelligent all-wheel-drive system is designed to adjust torque distribution on wet roads, loose gravel, steep grades, and other low-grip surfaces.

The SUV measures 5,045 mm long, 1,980 mm wide and 1,740 mm high, with a 2,950-mm wheelbase. It offers five seats rather than the seven-seat layout of the larger Tang variant.

BYD claims more than 1,000 mm of second-row legroom and a rear-seat backrest angle of up to 130 degrees. Cargo volume, curb weight, ground clearance, and wheel-and-tire specifications have not been released.

Inside, the Tang introduces a “Starship Dual-Screen” cockpit. It combines a 35.4-inch integrated far-distance ring display with a 30-inch panoramic screen for navigation, vehicle information, and entertainment.

LiDAR ADAS and Market Position

The BYD Tang receives the company’s God’s Eye B driver-assistance system with LiDAR. Reported functions include traffic-jam following, high-speed assisted navigation, urban navigation assistance, and intelligent parking, including parking in narrow spaces.

BYD has not disclosed the ADAS SoC, computing performance, camera count, radar configuration, LiDAR specifications, or operational limits. These features should therefore be treated as ADAS rather than autonomous driving.

Potential rivals and cross-shopping alternatives in China include the AITO M7Lynk & Co 08 EM-PChery Fengyun T9, and Jetour Shanhai L9. These models are generally plug-in hybrid or extended-range vehicles, so they are not direct powertrain equivalents to the pure-electric Tang.

The Volkswagen ID.6 X is a more relevant pure-electric comparison for family-SUV use, although its market positioning, dimensions, and equipment differ. Final pricing will determine how closely the new Tang competes with these vehicles.

Launch Timing and Outlook

BYD expects the third-generation Tang to launch in the fourth quarter, but the exact date, trim structure, delivery schedule, and vehicle and battery warranty policies have not been announced.

The model’s combination of large SUV dimensions, long claimed range, rapid charging, premium suspension, and LiDAR-based ADAS gives BYD a strong technology-led proposition. Its global potential will depend on certified range figures, local charging compatibility, pricing, and whether BYD exports this version beyond China.
